Resources Survivor Q & AThank you so much for this question.
In the United States, the age of consent varies by state, mostly ranging from 16-18 years old. In many jurisdictions, if the survivor is under the age of consent, sexual contact with someone over 18 years old can be considered sexual abuse, regardless of the specific age difference between the individuals involved.
It's important to note that any sexual contact without consent is also considered sexual abuse, regardless of the age difference.
To learn more about the age of consent by state in the United States, you can visit this resource (Age of Consent in the US By State). You can also ask specific questions to RAINN's chatline here: Online Hotline | RAINN.
