Resources Survivor Q & AThank you for this question. Being groped in public by a stranger is a deeply violating and traumatic experience that no one should ever have to endure. It's an unfair and unacceptable invasion of your personal space and bodily autonomy. The shock, fear, and distress you might feel in such a situation are completely valid. It's important to acknowledge that this is a form of sexual assault, and you have every right to feel upset, angry, or overwhelmed.
If you're groped in public by a stranger, your safety should be your top priority. Immediately try to move away from the person who groped you. Clearly and loudly say "Stop!" or "Don't touch me!" to draw attention and establish that the contact was unwanted. If you feel safe doing so, report the incident to nearby authority figures like security guards, store managers, or transit officials. You might even consider calling the police to report the sexual assault, especially if you feel in danger, although it is understandable if that does not feel like a safe option for you.
If there are witnesses, ask if they saw what happened and would be willing to corroborate your account. Try to remember details about the perpetrator's appearance to aid in identification. After ensuring your immediate safety, seek support from friends, family, or a counselor to process the experience. You may also want to contact a sexual assault hotline for additional guidance and support.
Remember, the assault was not your fault. You have the right to feel safe in public spaces. It's important to take care of your mental and emotional wellbeing in the aftermath. Everyone reacts differently to such experiences, so be patient with yourself as you process what happened. You are not alone.
